Weekend Road Trips and Vacations Can Be A lot of Work

3 Things You Can Do to Stop Feeling So Overwhelmed

by Polly in Planning

We have been traveling a lot. A couple of weeks ago we traveled back to Pennsylvania for my niece’s wedding and this weekend we are heading back to PA for a cousin’s wedding. In August we have a family vacation planned.

Don’t get me wrong, I love vacations and weekend trips to visit family, but frankly they can be a lot of work.

Especially when special activities are involved like weddings because you really can’t just pick up and go without thinking through everything you need for the activities (i.e. dresses, shoes, underwear that doesn’t show through your dress!, gift & card….).

There is a lot you have to think through BEFORE you even leave and all of those details take time and mental energy to sort out.

So I have been writing it all down, so that I could share it with you in hopes you could use it to help make your next weekend trip or vacation a little easier.

Decisions that Needed to be Made

  • When are we leaving and when are we returning?
  • Which car are we taking?
  • What changes do we need to make to our work schedules? Do we need to request vacation time?
  • What activities are planned? Is there anything special we need for these activities?
  • How will the kids get their homework done?
  • Where are we staying? Do we need reservations, air mattresses?
  • What about the pets?

Things that Need Done Before We Leave

  • Gas in the car
  • Bank for cash
  • Turn down/off heat or AC
  • Check tire pressure, wipers, and oil in the car
  • Make any hotel or pet kennel reservations
  • Laundry so that we have clean clothes to take with us
  • Grocery shopping
  • Snack bag for the car
  • Devices charged and ready to go
  • Pack

What Won’t Get Done While We are Away (and do we care?)

  • Meal prep for the week (I usually do it on the weekends)
  • Household or lawn chores
  • Commitments to others or kids’ activities

This list I came up with was just for short (though jammed pack with activities) weekend road trips. Longer trips that involve flying or longer periods away from home would probably be more complicated to think through, but I think you get the idea.

Hope this helps.
